  • 01-03-04 Dean Raises $15 Million in Fourth Quarter (CNN News)
"Democratic presidential hopeful and front-runner Howard Dean raised more than $15 million in the fourth quarter of 2003, his campaign has announced, breaking his previous quarter's total of $14.8 million."

"That puts the Dean campaign's total fund raising for 2003 at more than $40 million, as the former governor of Vermont continues his grassroots push, hoping to win the party's nomination for its presidential candidate."

"While that is likely to be the most money raised by any of the Democrats in the race, it pales in comparison to the $50 million raised by the Bush-Cheney re-election team in the third quarter alone."

"Other candidates have yet to reveal their fund-raising numbers, which do not have to be reported until the end of January." 1-04

  • 01-03-04 Mid-December Poll on Candidates (CNN News)

  • 01-06-04 Bradley Backs Dean (Bloomberg.com)
"A presidential candidate in the 2000 campaign and a three- term senator, Bradley may give Dean a boost on Wall Street, where he has worked since leaving the Senate in 1996. Before joining entertainment and media specialist Allen & Co., Bradley was a vice chairman of the International Council of J.P. Morgan and Co."

"Dean's backers include party leaders and labor unions, the Service Employees International Union and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, which represent 3 million U.S. workers."

"That support has helped propel Dean into a lead over the eight other Democratic candidates in raising money and in polls of voters. A survey for Time magazine and Cable News Network showed that in direct match-ups Dean was the top choice of registered Democrats. His closest competitor is retired General Wesley Clark, who gets support from 32 percent, compared with 46 percent for Dean." 1-04

  • 01-07-04 Bush Raises $131 Million (San Francisco Chronicle)
"President Bush, with no challenger for the Republican presidential nomination, begins the 2004 election year with a record $99 million in the bank and an aggressive plan to raise millions more."

"While the nine hopefuls competing for the Democratic nomination have spent much of the money they've taken in, Bush's cash-on-hand total shows he's spent a fraction of the record $130.8 million he raised last year." 1-04

  • 01-15-04 Candidate Braun to Endorse Dean (CNN News)
"Former Sen. Carol Moseley Braun -- trailing badly in the polls -- will drop out of the Democratic race for president and will endorse front-runner Howard Dean, Democratic sources told CNN late Wednesday." 1-04

  • 01-16-04 Dean and Gephardt Pull Negative Ads (USA Today)
"Democratic presidential rivals Howard Dean and Dick Gephardt declared a truce in their air war Friday, pulling negative ads from Iowa television in the closing days of a remarkably tight caucus race."

"The stakes are highest for Gephardt, who won the 1988 caucuses by four percentage points — a landslide in comparison to where the race stood Friday. A defeat would effectively end the Missouri lawmaker's 28-year political career, aides said." 1-04

  • 01-16-04 Poll: Kerry Leads in Iowa (Bloomberg.com)
